KAREN STRANG
A graduate of Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art, Karen was encouraged by her professor Alexander Moffat to consider the political as well as the visceral aspects of painting. After receiving the Newbery Medal and the Sir William Gillies Travelling Scholarship amongst other awards, she completed postgraduate study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw during a tumultuous political period in the mid 1980s. Karen was secretary at Transmission Gallery after returning, and exhibited twice with the Glasgow Group in the 1980s, winning the Edwin Morgan painting prize in 1988. Karen has received various awards allowing her to travel and exhibit abroad over the years. In her painting, Karen explores expressive figuration outlining the human condition whilst utilising aspects of archetypes found in mythology and close observation of natural form, inspired by her Scottish-Polish heritage. She received the Glasgow Society of Women Artists' Lauder award in 2022 and has recently exhibited with Claire Paterson and Ashley Cook in two "Renewal" exhibitions.
